Thermal physics of buildings is concerned with thermal insulation and moisture protection of buildings.
The objectives of our planning and consulting work are to save energy using efficient structures, to restore comfort to rooms, to ensure the hygiene of rooms in a satisfactory manner and to protect buildings from damage due to moisture.
Our consulting work is based on drawings, plans and descriptions of building components. In specifying dimensions for building components, we pay attention to maintaining sufficiently high surface temperatures and ensuring that the component designs are compatible with the transport mechanisms and equalisation processes of water vapour. In this manner, condensation and mould formation can be avoided from the outset.
Advice regarding building physics is generally necessary for all large buildings, and especially for those with mixed uses and various functional areas. In this regard, we provide guidance regarding building physics not only for new constructions, but also for remodelling, refurbishment and repair.
Careful planning with regard to building physics ensures that the utility value of the building can be maintained.
Thermal insulation certification according to DIN 4108 and the Thermal Insulation Ordinance
As part of our building physics consulting work for complete buildings, we generate certificates of thermal insulation for permit authorities in accordance with applicable requirements and guidelines. In this regard, we naturally take into account regional differences in statutory requirements.
Total building physics consulting
Going beyond the generation of thermal insulation certificates, we collaborate with heating system designers to optimise the energy balance of the entire building. If desired, we can verify the cost effectiveness of thermal insulation measures by means of a cost-benefit analysis.
In the evaluation and elaboration of the structural details of building components, we take into consideration not only thermal aspects, but also those relating to the control of moisture diffusion (water vapour diffusion) and building damp-proofing.
Thermal bridge investigations
Using the finite-element method, we investigate multi-dimensional structures with regard to undesired energy losses and surface temperatures. In this way, for example, it is possible to investigate the danger of surface condensation with complex and critical building components. Static as well as non-static computations can be carried out.
Measurements of structure physics
With our measurement equipment, we can investigate room and surface temperatures, air humidity and air velocity. Long-term measurements are also possible. In addition, we have measurement equipment for determining the moisture content and specific gravity of building materials.
