Expert Workshop at the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BASt) for the Research Project „Integrated Assessment of Protection Measures“

On 26 and 27 April 2016, experts invited by the initiator of the research project (Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen/ German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt)) and the research contractor Müller-BBM in cooperation with the engineering office Ulrich Lank) and more than 40 experts from all of Germany met in Bergisch Gladbach. For two days, the experts discussed in working groups and plenary sessions new and unconventional approaches for the development of “model buildings” and their assessment with respect to possible impacts on the environment. Taking into consideration the effects on protectable goods (climate; air, water; soil, plants and animals, landscape, cultural or other material goods, human beings) and the related interaction between the protectable goods, efforts must be made to optimize buildings or road construction projects with the aim of reducing possible environmental conflicts and achieving a great number of positive effects on people and the environment. Representatives from research, administration and industry participated very actively in the lateral thinking which was characterized by a high level of expertise and a wide range of practical experience.
