Traffic Noise Research
Müller-BBM has been closely involved in national and international research activities on tyre-road noise for more than 20 years now. With our calculation model SPERoN (Statistical and Physical Explanation of Rolling Noise) pass-by levels of vehicles can be predicted for a wide variety of road surfaces. The SPERON model was developed in the research project "Einfluss der Fahrbahntextur auf das Reifen-Fahrbahn-Geräusch” (The influence of surface texture on tyre-road noise) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Infrastructure (1996 to 2000). The computational model is constantly updated and enhanced, most recently in the "Quiet traffic 3" (Leiser Straßenverkehr 3) project of the German Federal Ministry of Economics.
Within the framework of recent research activities, Müller-BBM is closely involved in the development of low noise road surfaces, too. Since 2001, we have participated in several projects of the "Quiet Traffic" (Leiser Straßenverkehr) research network (2001 to 2014) in Germany as well as in projects for "Low noise concrete pavements" (Leise Betonfahrbahn), funded by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), within the framework of the Federal Innovation Program for Roads (Nationales Innovationsprogramm Straße). Currently we are working with the NaHiTAs project (Nachhaltiger High-Tech Asphalt, sustainable high tech asphalt road), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Furthermore, we are and have been involved in several national and international research projects concerning low noise road surfaces. In the German National Road Innovation Program, we worked in two projects on low noise concrete road surfaces. Within the European projects ITARI (EU 6th Framework program, 2003 to 2007) and HOSANNA (EU 7th framework program, 2009 to 2013) we developed novel road surfaces as well as advanced tyre-road noise prediction models.
With our experience from these and other projects, we also develop suitable m ethods and devices to measure and assess the relevant acoustic properties of roads.
