Noise control measures at the Wolke7 Catering Pavilion near the "Wolkenturm" in Grafenegg

Property Developer Award ("Bauherrenpreis") 2017 in Vienna

Ten years ago, the nextENTERprise architects created one of Austria's most impressive outdoor concert venues in the Grafenegg palace garden: the so-called Wolkenturm open-air stage, a landmark emanating a unique charm even in the festival off-season. However, the event catering used to be far less convincing: on the way to the Wolkenturm, the catering facilities established and extended by the leaseholder over time were no longer ideal. Therefore, the responsible company "Kulturbetriebsgesellschaft" initiated an improvement of the catering facilities which also were to become a new architectural highlight.

The result was an extraordinary catering pavilion meeting all requirements on a modern catering establishment which, at the same time, ensures the necessary silence during concert events in the nearby Wolkenturm: all cooling units were installed and encased in such a way that their operation does not cause any disturbances.

With its undulating roof resembling "a leaf between the trees" that is supported by delicate steel columns, the pavilion perfectly merges with the park scenery. The in-situ concrete surface, double-curved and only 20 cm high, defines the natural curvature as its design principle and is a masterpiece originating from the creative and interdisciplinary collaboration among architects and engineers. Under the roof, a corresponding ground area is covered with a soft granulate that serves acoustic attenuation purposes and for minimizing glass breakage.
