Ships in ports – how to bring down noise emissions from exhaust gas systems

Shore-side energy supply is the perfect solution for ships in ports. But, as a matter of fact, it is the diesel engines on board that are far more frequently in use for energy supply – significantly contributing to the noise and pollutants emitted from a ship in port.

For the future, a significant reduction of noise emissions and exhaust emissions from ships is required. Consequently, there is an increased demand for solutions providing exhaust gas purification and noise reduction at a time. Therefore, the design structure needs to be adapted to the respective characteristics of the two individual systems. Often enough, though, the interior design structure of an exhaust gas purification system, while fully compliant with its very own requirements, would not comply with the ideal structure of an exhaust gas silencer. Therefore, appropriate testing of the acoustic effectiveness is mandatory for the construction of these systems.

Müller-BBM has developed a procedure for the determination of the effectiveness of large silencers directly at works in a no-flow condition and at ambient temperatures prior to an installation onboard.

Regarding the mostly huge dimensions of such silencers it is convenient to perform these acoustic measurements directly at the manufacturing site. This procedure can be used for combined systems with exhaust gas purification components and silencers, too.

Besides the acoustic aspects, the experts of Müller-BBM can advise you in emission control using continuous automatic monitoring systems and/or reference methods from Müller-BBM laboratories regarding emission components like PM, SOx, NOx, PM etc. Thus, Müller-BBM can assist you in the dimensioning of silencers and complete systems combining the functionalities of exhaust gas purification systems and silencers.
