Site selection concept for a new air quality monitoring network in the city of Gelsenkirchen

The city of Gelsenkirchen is planning to set up a comprehensive monitoring network to measure air quality in the urban area. The data will be used in the context of various applications, such as environmentally sensitive traffic control, air pollution control planning and topics such as environmental justice, health and environmental education. To achieve this, Müller-BBM Industry Solutions GmbH is working together with the city of Gelsenkirchen to develop a site selection concept.

In the multi-stage process, the requirements for data quality and measurement technology will be defined based on the planned applications. The scope of the measurements will be agreed upon with the client to ensure that potential targets are met, while also taking into account the acquisition costs and long-term operating costs. On the basis of the site requirements according to the 39th BImSchV and the recently adopted directive (EU) 2024/2881, the site selection will initially be based on objective criteria, e.g. predicted air pollution levels or demographic characteristics such as the proportion of vulnerable population groups in the respective city districts. The detailed selection of the measuring points will be realised during on-site visits.
