Noise and vibration control on railway tracks

Müller-BBM is also engaged in predicting noise and vibration, e.g. on bridges or track superstructures. If excessive vibration can be expected in these locations, then vibration control systems such as mass spring systems are utilized. We will support you when predicting the efficacy and design of protective measures. The dimensioning of suitable noise control measures on railway tracks also forms part of our remit.

Rolling noise and vibration predictions

Railway engineering does not stop at the vehicle. The railway system also includes the tracks, the ongoing development of which requires evaluation and attention from an acoustic aspect. In collaboration with Deutsche Bahn AG, Müller-BBM has developed a wheel/rail impedance model (RIM), in which the noise propagation from passing trains by excitation of the running surface roughness can be calculated. The RIM further distinguishes itself by its enhanced facility in calculating the vibration excitation and propagation.

Rail roughness and track decay rate measurements

The rolling noise of rail vehicles is mainly determined by the roughness of the rails and of the wheels as well as by the track attenuation. For acoustic acceptance tests of rail vehicles, the comparability of different measurement locations must be established. Therefore, test tracks must meet certain requirements considering rail roughness and track decay rate. Müller-BBM as an accredited test laboratory performs measurements of rail roughness and track decay rate following EN 15610 and EN 15461. For rail roughness measurements, we use the m|rail trolley measuring system of our sister company Müller-BBM Rail Technologies.
